SmartWOD Workout of the Month “Oops!... I Gripped It Again”: athlete holding two kettlebells in the gym

Oops!... we did it again. 😏

Our new SmartWOD Workout of the Month “Oops!... I Gripped It Again” takes aim at two things this time: your grip strength and your core.

All it takes is four exercises and five punchy rounds: rowing, toes-to-bar or hanging knee raises, farmer’s carries, and V-ups or tuck crunches.

Sounds manageable at first – until you notice that your grip and your abs barely get a chance to recover between exercises.

Five rounds, each one for time – with one minute of rest in between. The training stimulus pretty much tells you what’s coming: grip & midline fatigue.

Your grip is already working during the rowing, before you head straight to the pull-up bar. After that, 100 meters of farmer’s carry are waiting for you – so you won’t get many chances to give your hands and forearms a break.

Your core gets to work practically the entire time, too. Toes-to-bar and V-ups hit it directly, and during the farmer’s carry you need it to keep your torso stable under the heavy weights.

So the challenge isn’t just finishing every single round as fast as possible. You also want to keep your times from completely falling apart from round to round.

What do you need for the workout?

Tip: Keep a close eye on your grip above all. If 15 unbroken toes-to-bar already push you to your limit early on, a planned split can be faster than long involuntary breaks later in the workout.

“Oops!... I Gripped It Again” in Different Difficulty Levels

Enough theory. Here are the three levels of the workout:

Fitness level Performance (Pros)

5 Rounds, each for time:

20/15 Row Calories
15 Toes-to-Bar
100 m Farmer’s Carry (32/24 kg)
15 V-Ups

Rest: 1 minute after each round

Fitness level Fitness (Advanced)

5 Rounds, each for time:

15/12 Row Calories
10 Toes-to-Bar
100 m Farmer’s Carry (24/16 kg)
10 V-Ups

Rest: 1 minute after each round

Fitness level Starter (Beginners)

5 Rounds, each for time:

15/12 Row Calories
10 Hanging Knee Raises
100 m Farmer’s Carry (16/12 kg)
10 Tuck Crunches

Rest: 1 minute after each round

Which Level Is Right for Me?

The deciding factors here are your skills on the bar, your grip strength, and the weight for the farmer’s carry.

  • If 15 toes-to-bar still come reliably under fatigue and you can carry 32/24 kg over 100 meters with control, the Performance level is waiting for you.
  • In the Fitness level, the toes-to-bar stay in, but with fewer reps and a lighter farmer’s carry.
  • In the Starter level, they’re replaced by hanging knee raises, you do tuck crunches instead of V-ups, and you carry even lighter weights.

Choose your level so that you can still move cleanly in round five. Because that’s exactly when you’ll see how well your grip and core really hold up.

Why This Workout Hits Your Grip and Core So Hard

In “Oops!... I Gripped It Again”, the demands don’t simply alternate – they build on each other.

  • The rowing gets your heart rate up and already keeps your hands and forearms busy.
  • On the pull-up bar, the load on your grip increases significantly while your core has to work at the same time.
  • During the following farmer’s carry, your hands get no break and your core has to stabilize the heavy kettlebells.
  • The V-ups or tuck crunches finish off every round with one more round of targeted core work.

One minute of rest – and then the fun starts all over again.

How Should You Approach “Oops!... I Gripped It Again”?

Five separate rounds for time tempt you to go all-out right from round one. And that’s exactly what can come back to bite you later.

On the rower, you should work at a brisk pace but keep enough in the tank for the exercises that follow. What matters most is how you break up your toes-to-bar. If you know your grip shuts down quickly after a big set, split them deliberately from the very start.

On the farmer’s carry, on the other hand, you want to keep moving as much as possible. Try to cover the 100 meters without unnecessary stops and keep your core stable the whole way.

Your goal: five rounds with times as consistent as possible, instead of one sensational first round followed by four increasingly painful ones. For more on spreading your energy wisely, check out our article on workout pacing.
